Third, we should use PowerPoint sparingly in terms of its timing. I notice also in many places where I preach that the slide is left up there long after the point is already made. This is a grave mistake. Whether the preacher is aware or not, the audience still occasionally glances up at the slide. What if the timing of the glance at the slide coincides with an important point the preacher is trying to make? The answer is obvious. The one stealing a glance at the slide will miss the important point. There is a large percentage of our audience that has a kind of disorder I call “hypervision” where the vision catches many other things in the peripheral and the brain processes the trivia. Some children who are tested with attention deficit may simply be suffering from this hypervision. Imagine the impact of the slide on a person with this disorder. Preachers have a responsibility to communicate with the tech team on when to take down the slide, whether it is one, two or three minutes after the point has been made. Preachers cannot assume that the tech team can do this job because the tech team is not in charge of the content.
Fourth, and this is my pet peeve, we should use PowerPoint sparingly for Scripture. I know I sound super old-school, but hear me out. I can always tell whether an audience is biblically literate by the way they enter the building. If they do not carry the Bible to worship, they are most likely not going to be attending a biblically literate church. Am I too harsh? Not likely, given my wide speaking experience in many denominations with many languages all over the world. These days, many churches use PowerPoint slide for the Scripture reading in the sermon. Soon after, the slide is taken down. With the Bible not originally opened, it is less likely that somehow the audience is magically motivated to open the Bible to check on the preacher’s exegesis. For some shoddy preachers, this may be supreme gospel, but not for the preacher who ACTUALLY thinks that the Bible is the word of God. I’ve heard from preachers that Bible-reading is the audience’s responsibility. I disagree. Bible reading habits should be cultivated by our church leaders, even in the style we use our technology. The audience is just sheep who likely takes the path of least resistance. The preacher who does not take responsibility for that cultivation is not leading. I always encourage my audience (in fact admonish is more like it) to look in the Bible when I preach. If I get it wrong, the audience at least can keep me the preacher accountable through God’s word. How wonderful it would be for all preachers to be kept accountable in their exposition instead of randomly come up with their own applications and senseless stories! If we take Sola Scriptura of the Reformation seriously (and I propose that we hardly do that), we would do better to ask our audience to track with us IN THEIR OWN BIBLES instead of relying on our “great learning” as preachers to inform them. If our audience loses ability to read the Bible, what good is the Reformation? This is why I often tell my students that we’re reaching a new Dark Ages with the new technology. I think I’m not far from the truth. An audience that fails to think will fail to grow spiritually. This too is the responsibility of the preacher.
In his letter to Timothy, Paul states very clearly in 2 Tim. 2.15 which sits as a nice paper weight on my desk, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” This was given to me at my ordination and I’ve often tried (and sometimes failed) in making this my life verse. I want to focus on the word for “handle” which actually means to “cut straight.” The usual understanding of this word is that if we study hard, the message will be fine. I think it means far more. The word is richly metaphorical to mean something like “to cut straight so that the person can take that road to arrive at the truth.” In other words, the preacher must not only understand the truth but must use the best means to cut that road straight for his hearers. In modern application, cutting straight that word of truth will cause the preacher to recognize the power of media to mislead, or to lead people AWAY rather than TOWARDS the truth. The great preacher John Stott writes, “To cut it straight is to be accurate on the one hand and plain on the other in our exposition.” This too involves our usage of media.
What then is my conclusion about technology? I’ll share the same saying I’ve done so for years in my preaching classes and seminar. If you can’t preach without PowerPoint, you can’t preach with PowerPoint. Try preaching in pitch black under power outage (I have!). When I said this on one occasion as a visiting professor, several local professors became quite agitated; they misunderstood me as disparaging technology. I do not disparage invention; I welcome it. I disparage uncritical usage of invention without a critical realization of problems human genius brings. The wise will think before following the latest and greatest fad while the fool rushes in.
