This is not like the singspiration where the song leader often gives way to the song lyric. Preaching focuses on the messenger and the message. Even though most preachers would feign humility by saying that the sermon should focus the audience on the Lord, reality shows that the preacher is part of that focus directing people’s gaze to the Lord. The preacher IS the messenger and needs to take full responsibility for both verbal and non-verbal cues. If most communication is non-verbal, then how would a multi-tasking audience be able to get the message without looking at the messenger? I dare say, the effectiveness is about as good as preaching to drunks who can focus on neither this nor that. An expert once said, “More is not better. Better is better.” Another communication expert states the matter even more strongly, “More information is equal to no information.” If when the PowerPoint slide is taken down, the audience cannot restate its content, it is a worthless PowerPoint.
