On Writing by Stephen King: a Reflection

I'm not merely a writer. I'm also quite interested in how other writers do their work. I realize that every writer is unique and the process by which writing comes about is certainly unique. I'm still interested.
I've been encouraged by my good friend Stephanie to look at On Writing by Stephen King. Since she has such wonderful taste in books, I didn't think twice before I went and got the book. I was delighted. It seems that the method of novel writing is almost the opposite of the kind of writing I do. The creative process King talks about seems so fluid and organic that it almost takes on a life of its own. I find this so fascinating. King talks about techniques of how he enhances his characters. When I read him, I recall so many biographies that are written to a dull crawl. So, do history books. How much more fun if those genres adopt the approach of King's novel, but then, we could become quite scared from reading bios and history.
There are however some good lessons King states that we all can learn,regardless of the kind of writer we are. I find his advice on reading as a stimulus for writing to be quite relevant. Many can't write because they don't read. Another gem is his idea of "don't tell, show." Instead of saying that someone is tired, a good author may say that the character's eyes are becoming watery as he gives one large yawn. I think a lot of biblical writers are "good" writers in the definiton of King. After looking at his process for creating a narrative, I think we can turn the same observations on biblical narratives. King' advice to leave some time before first and second revision of a manuscript is also quite helpful. I find that I naturally do that which has helped me quite a lot. Due to a busy writing schedule and the interval between my first draft and my translator's edition along with my many new projects, I naturally puts aside a manuscript for a few weeks. When rereading the manuscript with my translator and editor, I feel like meeting an old friend who needs a new set of clothes and I knowjust exactly where to get it for him.

My favorite advice was, don't be afraid to delete the prose you're attached to when editing. I get very attached to my words and now I find myself casually deleting stuff I never would have in the past. I'm glad you enjoyed this book.
I do that ALL THE TIME with my sermons, even in between services. I value that advice totally.
So glad you enjoyed this book! Anne Lamott's book "Bird by Bird" is another fascinating piece on the art and craft of writing. Show, don't tell is an English teacher's mantra. I cannot tell you how many hours I have devoted to encouraging/lecturing/demonstrating/begging students to choose more active verbs. I won't show you either, making the whole "show, don't tell" lesson moot in this situation.
